A Dangerous Method – Kiera Knightley (et al) let the side down!

I know that there are many other blogs & reviews doing the rounds with the upcoming release of the film “A Dangerous method” … I have scoured many blogs and reviews worldwide to see what this might be like as of course it has 2 infamous scenes of Keira Knightley (a woman in REAL need of a damned hard spanking in real life) so what a drag, then, to report that it appears that this film seems misconceived… I majored in Pyschology many moons ago) and from what I’ve read, it feels like a surface treatment of ideas that deserve so much better. Scripted by Christopher Hampton from his own play “The Talking Cure” and the John Kerr book “A Most Dangerous Method,” this is a film that tip toes around its subject to such a degree that from many commentators I have read, seems to infuriate them! I don’t understand how you make a movie about this subject matter that has no kink, no heat and no pulse when the ingredients are all there! Viggo Mortensen, one of the most interesting collaborators that Cronenberg has ever had, is almost wasted here. He plays Freud, showing up from time to time to deliver a few clever lines and to “tut-tut” Michael Fassbender’s Jung.

So what’s it about? The film deals with Jung and his treatment of a particular patient, a Russian Jew named Sabina Spielrein. Kiera Knightley plays her, and while I’m not the biggest fan of Knightley’s work in general (she is incredibly striking, a real beauty but her acting can come across as far too wooden for my personal tastes). I still think Atonement was her best film she made… but of course, my interest in this film are the scenes we’ve all heard about! Fassbender has proven himself to be one of the more interesting guys out there right now, and yet this role is a straightjacket for him, rigid and uninteresting. Jung’s meant to be struggling with his intellectual and sexual sides in the film. If a film can make a scene involving Fassbender spanking a mostly-naked Knightley boring, something has gone very wrong and that seems to be the general consensus out there!

As always, Cronenberg’s films are controlled and carefully considered, and it feels like he got what he wanted from his cast. It just seems to be a case of a misfire at the conceptual level. There’s one stretch in the film where things threaten to heat up, when Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel) shows up at Jung’s clinic, and every time Cassel is onscreen, it’s interesting. Watch him move around Jung’s office during their first interview. It’s impossible to take your eyes off of what Cassel is doing. But the rest of the film just doesn’t have that same spark, that sense of something lived instead of designed. It feels antiseptic. It feels like a term paper that someone filmed.

There are plenty of reviews out there and free previews, there are reports that Keira Knightley really acted the “Diva” in this expecting this nasty kink to be done as quickly and painlessly as possible… sadly, by the sounds of it, it shows, it still won’t stop me from going to watch it as it’s a fascinating subject. I have a lot of respect for Cronenberg as a filmmaker, but I’m worried that this film might be a dud he least expected with such a cast and a hell of a story (which of course happened to be a true account of a forbidden relationship between a respected doctor and his patient!) Oh well… maybe Miss Knightley will get it one day, eh? *sigh*

The Chief says… “Er, darling… if the people of the islands wish to remain affiliated to Britain… then that’s their decision, it’s their choice, not yours, or ours.”

Does she not remember the bitterness of 1982 when her previous incumbants, the undemocratic military “Junta” led by the ridiculous “General” Galtieri with his hilarious banana republic style military uniform caused so much loss of life on both sides when his forces invaded and were repelled 10 weeks later? It does make me cringe that if Argentina (once again) decides to take it to an international court then the idea they have a legitimate claim would again be thrown out, in fact, it should be the Dutch that we should be haggling over the future of the islands with, they 1st discovered it and left it to us as it was an uninhabited island. Anyway, for causing yet more unrest, Madame Presidente Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is obviously in dire need of a damned hard bare bottom spanking!

OK, you’ll see there is a full explanation of the movie on the home page, but of course you’ll get to see some movie images here first, along with some behind the scenes memories and additional images you won’t find anywhere else! This was the last movie that Pandora filmed with us and the girls had been eyeing up this Hot Tub from the moment they had arrived earlier in the day! I had mentioned that there was a Hot Tub so hoped that they’d find it fun to do a scene in it… I wasn’t disappointed… Anyone will tell you that it’s a great way to relax and unwind… bubbles are soothing,  which was just as well because having your wet bottom spanked can be super ouchy! Leia got a tongue lashing & spanking off Jean Bradley in her own inimitable way as Pandora looked on… just as we started filming, it started to rain heavily overhead, the hot tub area was covered but it didn’t stop me and one of the cam guys getting a bit of a soaking, I had to hide nearby and direct the film as the lighting seriously changed and we were actually running out of time as the girls had trains to catch back to London later that evening. I hadn’t bargained on the skies darkening so heavily and we only had one “daylight” from one direction and couldn’t use any others unless one of us fancied a spot of electrocution in the wet… but despite the severe constraints (the actual filming area was really tight) I have to heap praise on our editor, Neil, for the MP4 version which he played around with recently and that version is so much better despite the poor lighting. What members WILL see though is Pandora getting a real stinging spanking off both Jean & then Paul… and whether she was acting or not, I don’t know as she seemed to be really wincing, either way, I think it was the latter and that must have hurt after a full day’s filming. I’d once again like to say thanks to Pandora for making those scenes look convincing, I don’t think much acting was required for that as anyone having their wet bottom thrashed will testify to the fact it hurts like hell!

I haven’t mentioned Paul or Jean’s excellent contribution to not only this film but the entire film shoot, this was our first ever time filming and after my disastrous very first day where we had a complete no show from 3 models (unbelievable… you live and learn, though) it ended on a high, thankfully… and although I am sure we’d have done many things differently now, I am still proud of the way we coped that week and this was a feel good film that had a slightly different feel to it and of course after we stopped filming the girls got back in the tub finished their wine and got themselves ready for the trip back to London!

Hey everyone… we’re still here!!!

It only seems fair since I celebrated the national days of Wales (& Cornwall) recently that, as a true blooded Englishman… I celebrate OUR National Day today – April 23rd – St George’s Day!

We celebrate St. George’s Day, but which St George? Because there are two, actually…

There’s the George from the popular folk tale who slays a dragon, and there’s the real St. George who died on 23 April. So what do we know about the two Georges? Well the one that killed the dragon was born in Coventry and the real one was born either in Turkey or Greece depending on your point of view. Either way, he has served England for nigh on a thousand years.

 

Our relationship with St. George started in 1098 when he appeared to English Crusaders at the Battle of Antioch and helped them to victory. By 1415, St. George was so popular that 23 April was declared a national holiday and the Bishops of England ordered it to be celebrated like Christmas! The folk tale of St. George and the Dragon dates back to the Middle Ages when dragons were commonly used to represent evil, so it’s an excellent tale of good triumphing over evil. Since then St. George has been popularly identified with English ideals of charity, chivalry and courage (now known as the 3 C’s).
